Who is SAILS at Bayside?

SAILS@B is a community outreach arm of the Anglican Churches of Manly, Wynnum, Waterloo Bay and Cleveland. It is aligned with, and forms a part of, the wider SAILS group covering the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Canoeing

A committee representing the various Churches and external communities meets monthly to provide direction. A part-time Programme Coordinator manages the organisational and administrative aspects. A part-time Youth Support Worker provides support to the participants.

The organisation currently has 4 catamarans, 11 kayaks, safety boat and safety gear running very successful monthly events at Breakwater Park, Wynnum and Foreshore Park, Cleveland with assistance from Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast SAILS as and when required.

SAILS@B has a close working relationship with Bayside Adolescent Boarding Incorporated (BABI), Bahloo Women’s Youth Shelter, Redlands
BoysTown, BCC Active and Healthy Programmes, School Chaplains and the Youth Support Coordinators.

Sailing

SAILS@B Vision is to provide opportunities for youth at risk together with families and carers to overcome their difficulties, reach their potential and engage fully in community life.

During events, participants learn to sail, gain experience in kayaking and spend valuable time away from negative influences. SAILS@B encourages participants to develop strategies to deal with anger management, relationship skills, awareness of peer pressure resulting in positive self-esteem This unique approach reaches out to teenagers who may not be receptive to traditional programs, before they become involved in addictive or self-destructive behaviours.

The Loft Programme – Boat Building and other things

SAILS at Bayside - The Loft Entrance

2010 saw the development of The Loft – an “upper room” where a former timber yard stored its pine mouldings. Its purpose is to create a friendly environment where young people can develop skills to build boats and other water craft and at the same time attain competencies towards a TAFE recognised Cert 1 in Engineering.

The Loft Team with Fire Bug under construction

A Train the Trainer programme is under way under the watchful eye of The Loftmaster to ensure that product quality is maintained.

Fire Bug nearing completion

Once completed, the programme will expand to include youth from various backgrounds including Indigenous.

An Indigenous Youth Support Coordinator is keen to develop a relationship with The Loft project. He has welcomed us to his country and given us his blessing on the project.

SAILS @B is building a relationship with a Cert 4 Assessor with a view to developing competencies within the project.

Blessing of The Loft

Lights@Bayside – Glow-stick and Glow-bug twirling to music

Glow-sticks and Glow-poi are clear polycarbonate rods with coloured LED lights along the length. When twirled, they create dramatic visual image patterns.

With the recent Redland City Council Grant, SAILS@B has purchased the equipment for evening stick and poi twirling in the local skate-parks and sea-front parks within the Bayside area.
The activity involves twirling the sticks and poi to music creating visual art images in the air and providing a sense of coordination and pleasure.
