At The Anglican Parish of Waterloo Bay, we aim to provide worship services that meet the needs of diverse congregations.
We have 2 worship centres:-
- St. James -19 Station St. Wellington Pt. (UBD ref. 185. D 2)
- St. George’s – Cnr. Thorne Rd. and Victor St. Birkdale. (UBD ref. 164. I 20)
1. St. James (Wellington Point)
9.30am Holy Communion is celebrated each Sunday and is a traditional Anglican service.
Music is usually from the Australian Hymn Book.
The congregation is small and made up of mostly older people with a few younger families.
Members of the congregation are encouraged to participate in the service by being on the roster to do the readings, intercessions or other tasks.
Being a small congregation, the people have become a close circle of friends supporting each other.
2. St. George’s (Birkdale)
St. George’s offers 2 services each Sunday.
7.15am Traditional Anglican Communion service with music is from The Australian Hymn Book and a variety of other modern chorus books. The congregation is made up of mostly older people with a scattering of younger people. Members of the congregation are encouraged to participate in the service by being on the roster to do readings, intercessions and other tasks. This congregation is also a very supportive community.
9.00am Family Worship. This service caters to the younger families of the parish and contains “Children’s Ministry” prior to the children going to Kids For Christ (KFC, formerly Sunday School) and Godly Play (for children 3 years and up to KFC age).
Whilst the focus of this service is on families, there are quite a few older members (who are still very young at heart) in the congregation. Worship is a less formal Anglican Communion service with music from a range of sources – including Australian Hymn Book and a variety of other more modern sources. Depending on the musician for the day, the music could be organ, keyboard or guitar.
The children rejoin the service at Communion time. During the last hymn, they are encouraged to be musicians and use percussion instruments. Services are made more interactive for the children school holidays (when KFC and Godly play are not operating).
This contemporary service is presented by data projector onto a screen above the Altar thus avoiding the necessity to use hymn books, although there are always hard copies of the service available for anyone who has difficulty with the screen.
Members of the congregation are encouraged to participate in the service by being on the roster to do readings, intercessions and other tasks.
All weekly services are followed by a time of fellowship over tea or coffee.
In addition to these weekly services, the following services are conducted:
Nursing Home Services are held monthly in several local aged care homes. These services take the form of an abbreviated Communion Service with hymn singing. The venues include The Dutch Village, Sylvan Woods, Wellington Part, Buckingham Gardens and The Grange. The services are generally well attended by residents and several parishioners attend to help the residents follow the service and assist in finding hymns. Friendship Services which run for half an hour are held at St. George’s on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 10.00am. These services are designed primarily for aged people who are brought to the service by their family or carers as they are unable to attend the normal Sunday services. The service booklets at the Friendship are in large print and the hymns are usually old favourites. Whilst the focus of this service is on the older generation, everyone is welcome to attend. A delightful Morning Tea is provided afterwards.
